Ronda | Puenta Nueva, Ronda, from Arco del Cristo |
Ronda lies in a spectacular location on a high ridge above the River Guadalevin in the heart of Andalucia. The new and old parts of the town are split by a deep gorge, over 130 metres high. Across this gorge, Ronda is connected by the Puenta Nueva, a beautiful bridge.
South of the bridge is the old Moorish town, whose narrow, winding streets contain most of the interesting architecture, buildings and museums of Ronda. On the North side of the bridge is the Mercadillo district, the newer part of town, which developed after the Christian reconquest of Andalusia. It later increased in size in the 18th century after the first bridge across the highest point of the gorge was built. Though there are fewer sights in this area, it does contain most of the hotels and restaurants as well as the train and bus stations. |
