Toledo is a beautiful city in the heart of Spain. It makes for an excellent day-trip from Madrid though to really do it justice you’ll need to stay overnight or for a couple of days.

Islam, Judaism and Christianity have all left their mark on the city, resulting in a fascinating mix of buildings. In layout, it feels like a medina in a Muslim city with narrow, winding streets and hidden courtyards and patios.

If you visit in summer, watch out for the heat. We found Madrid stifling, but Toledo was even worse. It can get very crowded in summer but by early evening the crowds have usually thinned out, making it a great time to walk around the city.

Pros and Cons

Pros:Great location, lovely cobbled, steep streets, picturesque buildings
Cons:Far too warm in summer, crowded with tourists
