We arrived in Pompei on July 2003, approximately 1,924 years after all the fun. Way back in AD 79, while the Roman empire was still in its early days, Vesuvius erupted and the subsequent lava flow engulfed the town of Pompei. Pompei was destroyed, though the damage inflicted was perhaps less devestating than what a combination of time, weather, plundering and human recklessness has done to many Roman ruins elsewhere.
