Douz is known as the Gateway to the Sahara. It's one of the last towns you see before the desert stretches south for thousands of miles. In the last few years tourism has grown in Douz, and it now has a "Zone Touristique", beyond the Oasis and just before the Great Dune, with lots of 4 and 5 star hotels catering for package tours.
Despite the influx of visitors Douz is still a pleasant town with lots of character. At quiet times of the year, when there aren't too many tourists it can be a lovely place to visit and it's such a laid back, relaxed place you'll be tempted to stay a lot longer than you'd planned. |
