Douz is known as the Gateway to the Sahara. It's one of the last towns you see before the desert stretches south for thousands of miles. In the last few years tourism has grown in Douz, and it now has a "Zone Touristique", beyond the Oasis and just before the Great Dune, with lots of 4 and 5 star hotels catering for package tours.
Despite the influx of visitors Douz is still a pleasant town with lots of character. At quiet times of the year, when there aren't too many tourists it can be a lovely place to visit and it's such a laid back, relaxed place you'll be tempted to stay a lot longer than you'd planned.

Hello, Barry! You have paid a visit to that remote town of all places! Good for you! :-)
So, Tunisia is going to be as good as I hoped it will be. Thanks for the great pages.
Douz looks pretty good! thanks for the tips and the great photos:)
Hello - very nice picture of you standing on the Sand dunes - must have been a good experience! all the best, flyfreak
Your pictures of the Douz Oasis make me want to go there. Thanks.
Very useful hotel and restaurant tips. Haha, we surely had one hour camel trip but at sunset. My camel was young and a bit crazy :-)
Very interesting page, Barry. Thanks for sharing!
Douz remains a lovely place, even if it is now so touristy! As you say, it is always possible to find the true life of the oasis, if you go out of the regular tourists area!
Great page Barry! Thanks for sharing your adventures there. And thanks for stopping by my Lisbon page, i love Lisbon. Nat
I wonder if there is a hotel 31 Mars anywhere ariund there :-) That looks like a pretty good spread for less than $10 a pop.
