Tuesday Berber Market

  • Every Tuesday there is a huge Berber market held on the outskirts of Azrou. The morning of our departure coincided with market-day so we decided to stay around and see the market. It's held about 1.5km south of town. To get here, leave town by Boulevard Moulay Abdelkader and walk for about 20 minutes until you come to the market.

It's held in a large enclosed area and you'll see lots of people around. Buses bring Berbers down from the mountains to the market which is very much a local affair. We didn’t see anything we wanted to buy and to be honest it probably wasn‘t worth the hike. We met our one-toothed friend again on the way back to town and he told us the snow in the mountains had kept many Berbers away from the market and hence, it wasn't as lively as usual.

    Cooperative Artisnal

  • The Cooperative Artisnal on the Khenifra road sells rugs, carpets and interesting woodwork, made from the cedar in the forests around Azrou. These Artisnals can be found in many towns in Morocco and, in general, the prices are fixed but often quite high. However, you can be assured of the quality of the goods. We almost bought some of the cedar carvings but as we still had two weeks to go on our holiday we thought it would be too difficult to carry.

hi Barry Ive enjoyed your page and my reminisce of Azrou! One visit I haggled on my own and got a carpet for 200 dirham - was rather pleased with that!and the patisserie breakfast for coffee and pancake things!

a Berber-market is always interesting, although maybe a bit muddy after a rainfall...

Very interesting - I've enjoyed getting to know about a less well-known part of the country

A great view at Azrou on your intro! I guess you should climb up a hill to catch this pic! Thanks Barry for a virtual travel. I suppose berber's way of living is very interesting...
