Watch out for les Mademoiselles behind the wheels:-) This probably did happen. French drivers or rather Parisien drivers can be a little crazy sometimes...

Haha - here's one - never try to cross over to the Arc De Triomph from the Champs Elysees. With tweleve avenues converging on to Etoile, it can get a bit crazy here. Is there any order to this traffic? Doesn't look like it.

A couple of years back I was staying in Paris for two weeks and I had purchased the obligatory metro-card. The carte-orange is valid for up to a week - the renewal date is Sunday. Anyway, on the last Thursday of my visit I lost the same carte and had the choice of spending money on a 4-day pass or trying to get around for free. I tried the second option and was lucky enough to not get caught. Susan's card ran out on the Saturday and she tried the same thing - yet was caught and had to pay a 200 Fr fine. If you are going to attempt this a) be careful near the weekend or month-end when cards are renewed as there are many guards checking in stations and trains b) don't complain if you do get caught! Some people may have a problem with riding the trains for free, but maybe it's excuseable when you're young and broke....

If you are planning to visit Paris for a week or more, you will probably want to buy a metro-card. These can be bought in various forms (i.e. - for different zones, durations, etc) and can save lots of money on journeys. However, if you do a bit of planning you can save even more money. There are two types of passes - tourist and carte orange passes. Not surprisingly, the tourist passes are much more expensive as the carte oranges are designed for residents (though both passes have the same entitlements). However, if you bring a passport photo and fill out the relevant form at the ticket booth you can get the carte orange and save a fair bit of money.

alza Mon Sep 7, 2009 22:26 UTC Excellent, tks Barry! Was looking for Viaduc des Arts in Paris but had forgotten the name... so I missed it. Your love for this city is obvious. We all have a very special we like to go back to every so often. I love the 'drunk' picture with 4 Eiffel towers in the back ground! | leecouk12324 Fri Aug 17, 2007 14:52 UTC Great to see you can keep going back to the same City and finding different things to do - i did the same with Amsterdam - but last time also got away from City - went Beach - did some Sumo wrestling. Off the beaten track! |
