Berlin is a city I had long wanted to visit. Though not by any means the oldest of European cities, Berlin has had an eventful history, in particular in recent times. Now, almost 20 years after the fall of the wall, the city has had to reinvent itself once again. The increase in tourism and the return of the German parliament to Berlin have helped the city to start the rebuilding process, but reuniting citizens, who lived under different ideologies for so many years will take longer.
Berlin is still in many ways a city of contrasts. Potsdamer Platz, desolate for many years, is now contains some of the most modern buildings in Europe. But at the same time, parts of the city, in the east in particular, remain derelict, and eerily empty. |
