A half-hour drive east of Prague is the splendidly Gothic Kutná Hora, the medieval silver-mining town where the film version of Les Misérables was shot. The distinctive spires of its Cathedral of St.Barbara - whose roof seems to be draped from them - dominate the old centre of town, from where you can still don a hood and descend into the mineshafts. Be sure not to miss the macabre baroque-era ossuary, where monks arranged the bones of plague victims into fantastic decorative sculptures and chandeliers. Admission 110Kc. In 1912 one of the rooms in this palace was made available to the Russian Socialist Democrats. An occasion Lenin chose to engineer a Bolshevik take-over of the party. After 1948 the palace became Prague`s Lenin museum and contained 17,000 items relating to his life and work. It was also from here a balcony that President Klement Gottwald announced in the glorious February of 1948 the communism victory.

Designed by Moravian-born Adolf Loos for construction magnate Františk MÜller, from the outside this place is a solid white block. It`s insides are constructed from marble, mahogany and walnut, highly polished and cleanly designed. These materials are dispersed throughout the different rooms which all sit at various levels around an ascending sweeping spiral.

Opposite the French embassy is the 'Lennon wall'. During the communist era it was here that revolutionaries daubed anti-government slogans, running the risk of arrest. Today the wall is covered with graffiti - poems and words of peace written by millions of visitors from around the world. To get there, as you head towards the West bank of the Vltava across Charles Bridge take the steps on your left hand side. This takes you into an oval shaped square Na Kampě. Cross this and turn right.
