  • Set amid superb scenery at the head of Loch Shiel, the Glenfinnnan Monument was erected in tribute to those who fought and died in the Jacobite cause. Prince Charles Edward Stuart's standard was raised near here in 1745, marking the inspirational start to a campaign which ended at the battle of Culloden the following year. The story of Glenfinnan and the '45 is told at the Visitor Centre with commentary in six languages about the Jacobite campaign.

  • If you are a person who loves antiques then this place could be paradise for you. Most visitors miss this trip when they travel to London.
The early bird gets more than a worm at this largest of antiques markets, founded in 1855 by Prince Albert. Less commonly known as the New Caledonian Antiques Market, Bermondsey's hundreds of stalls hawk all manner of antiques and objets d'art but are particularly well-supplied with silverware, paintings, and furniture. While primarily a market for antique dealers from all over Europe, anyone with a billfold is welcome.

It opens Friday at 5 a.m

    ADDRESS
    Bermondsey Square, SE1
Walk from Borough or London Bridge underground station.

  • Over 100 feet above Kensington High Street, Kensington Roof Gardens took root in 1938 in the imagination of the owners of Derry and Tom's Department Store. It soon became an unlikely reality on top of the building itself, covering one and a half acres with three themed gardens: a red-bricked Tudor Garden; a Spanish Garden with palms, fountains and manicured lawns; and a formal English Garden that extends the length of the roof and includes a fish pond, live ducks and flamingos. Also the site of a bar and restaurant, the gardens are regularly open to the public when not booked for events. Call for opening times and information on evening club nights, which are open to non-members for a fee.

    ADDRESS
    99 High Street, W8 5ED

Close to High Street Kensington under ground station.

Off The Beaten Path: Regent's Canal cruise

  • Many people want not only to learn about the Regent's Canal but also to travel on it! It makes an excellent day to start with a visit to the London Canal Museum, then walk along the canal towpath to Camden (30 minutes walk) - or you can catch bus 214 if you do not wish to walk) and then take a relaxed boat trip to Little Venice, returning either by boat or from the nearby Underground station by train. A boat trip on the canal is easily combined with a visit to the museum and the world famous Camden Market. Several companies offer boat trips on a scheduled basis. Others only deal with pre-booked groups.
    Prices are around £ 6

  • It is not in the city centre but outside central london buth worth a visit.
Few of the thousands of visitors who shuffle about the corridors and great halls of Hampton Court Palace are aware that hidden within the complex is a striking 18th-century rectory available to rent for as little as 320 pounds per person, per night. Thanks to the Landmark Trust, a charity that offers holidays in historic buildings, visitors can enjoy the palace gardens when the crowds have long since gone home for tea. Ghosts are said to roam the grounds, however, such as that of Lady Catherine Howard, Henry VIII's fifth wife, who ran screaming out of the hall where she learned she was sentenced to be beheaded.

The area of London just to the north west of Paddington is called Maida Vale, after the battle of Maida that took place in Italy in 1806. The area is very pretty and is cut through the middle by the Regent's Canal.
The attractiveness of the directly around the canal, in the southern part of Maida Vale, has earned it the nickname of Little Venice, first coined by the poet Robert Browning.
There are lots of picturesque pubs and walks in the area, making it a very pleasant place to while away an afternoon in. The area also contains the Rembrandt Gardens, which were named in 1975 in order to mark the 700th anniversary of Amsterdam.

This building has been home to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) since the 1930s. The distinctive sculpture outside, designed by Eric Gill, is of Shakespeare's Ariel, who has become the symbol of British broadcasting.
You can visit the BBC Experience on Air exhibition, which was set up to commemorate the Corporation's 75th birthday. The exhibition charts the history of the BBC and TV and radio in general. From Marconi's wireless to the latest CD-ROMs, it charts it all. It also has several interactive galleries where, for example, you can forecast the weather, direct your own television soap, or take part in a radio programme.
The BBC Experience is open daily from 9.30am-5pm. Admission costs around £6 for adults

This heath covers a massive 800 acres, right in the heart of Britain's capital. And it is regarded by many as the nicest park in the city.
Much of the area has been left wild, with lots of woodland, but some parts have been landscaped or set aside for sports. There is a cricket field, a football (soccer) ground and several bathing ponds available.
The heath is particularly popular with walkers as it gives some great views across London, especially from Parliament Hill and from Kenwood. And at weekends the area is also a favourite spot for kite flyers.
Near the centre of the heath is a fenced off area known as Boudicca's Mound, where legend has it Queen Boudicca (Boudicea) was buried. And on the northern edge of the heath there is Kenwood House.
