Trafalgar Square: Sir Henry Havelock
  • Tip Rating:
  • The statue of British general who entered the army in 1815, he was sent (1823) to India, where he served in the first Burma War (1824–26), the first Afghan War (1839), and the Sikh Wars (1843–49). During the Indian Mutiny, Havelock recaptured (July, 1857) Cawnpore (Kanpur) from the rebels, but he was too late to save the British population from massacre. In Sept., 1857, he relieved Lucknow from siege, but he and his forces were then caught in the renewed siege. He died a few days after the relief of the city in November.

    Tower of London: Tower Hill
  • Tip Rating:
  • With a 900-year Royal heritage and a foreboding construction it's easy to imagine the tower as the nerve-centre of the British kingdom in centuries gone by. There's plenty to see, from ravens and Beefeaters to the armouries and Traitor's gate this place is a day out steeped in history.

Things To Do: The World's Biggest Dome...
  • Tip Rating:
  • IT IS HISTORY NOW,
    but still worth a visit

The Millennium Dome was beset by controversy even before it opened - its £750,000,000 price tag outraged many people. Despite being less popular than was hoped and dogged by mainly negative press, it is an incredible structure. Unfortunately the exhibitions have now closed and the Dome is no longer open to the public
