Road Trip USA

by ymike2000 - last update: Dec 31, 2007

Near California/Nevada border, west of Las Vegas
The USA is big. You can't see it in a week. Or a month. You don't get the picture by visiting one or two cities. And you miss almost all of the best parts if you fly between places.

The USA is diverse. If you don't like what you see, you will find something completely different within a day's drive. That's what keeps me on the road.

For my USA page I'm just sharing some photos I've taken from my travels. It's more images than information...think of it as a big coffee table book :-)

Star Spangled Banner

Most events here start with the national anthem, so let's listen to my friend Kelly sing it. The Drew University field hockey team is getting ready to play...we'll just listen in. Doesn't she sound great?

NYC

I've always lived on the East coast, NJ and Massachusetts. I like being on a coast - you can't really drive across the country if you start somewhere in the middle.

Originally from NJ, I moved back here just in time for New Year 2000. With all the talk of "Y2K bugs", I was anxious to see what happens to NYC at the stroke of midnight. Either the city was going to go dark, or it was going to explode, or it was going to have a great fireworks show.

At about 11PM I drove to Frank Sinatra Park in Hoboken, NJ, which is directly across the Hudson River from midtown Manhattan. At the stroke of midnight on New Years Day, I watched Times Square light up spectacularly. I was one of about 2 dozen strangers in the park. We marvelled at the light shows across the river and noisily drank champagne right there in the park for about an hour before moving on to where the night would take us.
