Talking about a touristic hotspot ...

Beppu, indeed it is a very hot place on the Eastern coast of Kyushu, the Southern main island of the Japanese archipel. Litterally HOT, as the town is build on top of a large number of hot-springs, above a active vulcanic rift deep under the surface. The hot springs have a great variety in colours because of the minerals that desolved in the boiling water, which gives a wonderful aspect to this place. The hotsprings, and also some geysers, are called "Jigoku", what translated from Japanese means "Hell". To experience why ... take a bath in one (-: Well, you can understand also without doing that, that it truely is a hell if you look at the steam coming from the water and the fact that many are hot enough to boil eggs in it. Looking over Beppu, everywhere there are plumes of vapor rising in between the buildings and even the little rivers that flow downhill, give of some steam. The town became therefor the number one spa (Onsen) in Japan with many health bathing houses and the unique mud/sandbaths you can enjoy directly on the shores of the Pacific.
