Nikko, shrines at the foot of mountains

by Pavlik_NL - last update: Jan 6, 2003

Famous woodwork tells the tale of the 3 monkeys

Toshogu-shrine's main part full of fine woodwork
Nikko is the holy town in Japan and holds some of the most important Shinto-shrines. Nikko has a warm connection towards the Shogun-times as here it is that the greatest of all Shoguns has been buried: Tokugawa Ieyasu (in the Toshogu-shrine). Do you know the three monkeys "see no evil, hear no evil, be silent about evil"? well, they say the origin of this animated scene is here in a temple that has little statues of them in the woodworks surrounding it. It is also rather different from all the other towns full of temples and shrines. Main reason is wild natural setting that is surrounding you (mountain forests) and you never feel like being inside a town (well, Nikko is also not that big). You will experience the idea of being in a big forest with the rising mountains at the Northern and Eastern horizons. Meadows of green are to be found along the river and the entrance-roads.

Maybe if I walk over that bridge everyday, I'll never die! :-)
