Beatty lives, Rhyolite is death (Ghosttown)

by Pavlik_NL - last update: Oct 24, 2002

The rise and fall of a town.

Leftovers of the townhall.
Many ghosttowns are in Nevada. Towns that once lived up when gold (or any other valuable material) was found and like vultures many came to take their pick. Just outside Beatty is an example: Rhyolite. In it's good old days it counted 6.000 inhabitants (1907), but after the little silver was mined out the town crumbled and almost disappeared. It's also not a nice place to live as it lies at the entrance of Death Valley and you can imagine how hot and dry it is here.
