No city was more beautiful then my hometown Arnhem, until I came to San Francisco. I even looked for a way to emigrate to the City on the Bay, but the American green-card-system is awfully selfish (how dare they say their country is full - come and try The Netherlands for a change!). San Francisco is the most beautiful city I have ever seen. The situation on the Golden Gate is amazing and the spirit that the city has is perfect. Is it because the constant danger of earthquake that the people seem to care much more then anywhere else. The city is - in my humble opinion - completely in balance and holds an enormous variety in Nationalities. Europa is recognisable in many buildings and the spirit of the city: old-fashioned, but tolerant and open. China-town and Japan-town represent Asia in a very special way. Downtown is typical American, high skyscratchers and booming business.
Highlight are using the cabletram (even when you have to stand in line, it's just great fun), a visit to Alcatraz, dinner in Chinatown and Golden Gate-bridge and park. First time there? Don't be ashamed to take a standard citytour as it is most effective to see these sightseeings.
