Staying in Amsterdam centre has - of course - it's charmes. Everything at the doorstep of the hotellobby, well, that of course also meets it’s price. By the way, make sure if the accommodation is in a place that you want it yourself, otherwise the surprise can be pretty big when you walk through a certain top attraction and (in)famous area and find out that your cheap hotel or the youth-hostel is besides a series of red aluminated windows with very friendly smiling ladies (also offering a bed to you).

Options outside Amsterdam are less expensive and - most of the time they offer much more comfort / value for the price you pay. With the excellent public transport from and to Amsterdam, one often only needs half an hour to end up in the centre anyway. For example: try the countryside North of Amsterdam, if you like natural (Dutch) scenery this is the place to be (Purmerend, Zaandam, but also Volendam). Outside these towns and in the “polders” are also farm stays possible often in combination with Bed & Breakfast in a Dutch family (by the way, don't expect that they live in a windmill and wear wooden shoes - hahaha).

In summertime campgrounds could be an idea. The “camping” in The Netherlands are belonging to the best (and worst) in the world. Some farmhouses offer campground with only a few places (we call it “kamperen op de boer”) and this can be a very nice surprise in combination with the city itself. Again, one can go easy to the centre by public transport and some campgrounds or farm stays offer a rental bicycle to get around.

The luxurious 5-star hotel NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky is situated in the very heart of Amsterdam at Dam square, opposite the Royal Palace. There is the wonderful Wintertuin, the glass palace dating from 1879 where breakfast and lunch is served.

The victoriahotel is situated straight across the square in front of the Central Station. This huge block offers great rooms with good services and in the middle of Amsterdam. In front of the entrance the canal boat tours start and therefor this location is very good for people who stay short and have quite some money to spend.

Unique Qualities: The story around the Victoriahotel is quite funny and therefor I am telling you it here. Look very carefully at the huge block. When the building constructor planned the hotel, it had to smash down various canalhouses to create the space for the building. He bought all houses from the owner's, accept one canalhouse in which an old lady kept her property and didn't want to sell. After a long legal battle the lady "won". The architect remodelled his plans and the Victoria hotel was built around the canalhouse.

Within the neighbourhood the "Walletjes", the famous red light district, there are many small and cheap hostels, inns, hotels and yought hostels. For those who like to stay with a red glow coming through the curtains, this is the place to be. The prices are low and the beds, well, still quite okay. Of course don;t expect any supurb service, 'cause outside you can be serviced anyway (additional prices! - hihihi).

Amsterdam is famous about it's houseboats, so why not stay on the water yourself. The waves will make you fall asleep softly after a busy day in the thrilling capitol of The Netherlands. The Botel is on the Amstel and so also not that far from the central district of Amsterdam. Prices are quite alright and service is good.

For the best Bed & Breakfast or farmstays, you can find great opportunities in the North East from Amsterdam. Only a 20 minutes drive from the centre or 30 bus tour away in absolutely typical Dutch scenery. Dike villages, former fishermen harbours and great green fields that are combined with a thousand canals or ditches. Stays are especially nice for children, for whome the hectic of Amsterdam city is just not healthy.

This art deco building will immediately jump to eye when approaching this neighborhood. Already for more then a century, this hotel is one of the most famous ones in Amsterdam. Often famous people stay here and of course ... traditionally this hotel was ment for American visitors. Now-a-days you only need a huge wallet to stay here and it doesn;t matter where you are from. The interior of the café and the restaurant are also worth a visit, even just to see it while drinking a cup of coffee or tea. But even with this, reckon with a quiet outrages pricetag.
