Korenmarkt for a buzzing nightlife and other Arnhem, Netherlands Nightlife Tips

Arnhem is, after Amsterdam, the second 'going out'-place in The Netherlands. ost nightlife is centralised around the Korenmarkt. Here you find numerous cafés, restaurants and bars as well as many dancing and several discotheques. Especially the Thursday, Friday and Saturdaynights are booming with teenagers and 'older teenagers'. The Jansplein is around the corner, where also some cafés and dancings are.
The concentration makes it easy to switch place if the atmosphere doesn't suite you. Thus it holds for everything something.

Dress Code: From casual to extravagance.
Directions: The Korenmarkt is at walkingdistance from the central train- and busstation attached to the shoppingstreets of the centre.

Especially in spring and summertime, the city knows many activities and several festivals. Topping are Queens-day (3ost of April), our national holiday and the Rhine Festival (mostly the last weekend of August). Furthermore there is a "kermis" (fair) in spring, summer and autumn. All these festivals include one night with fireworks that usualy are lit along the river Rhine. It is truely magnificent to see the colourful explosions reflect on the riverwater from the kays. However, at night Arnhem also offers a nice view from one of the bridges (preferably the "New Bridge" or "Nelson Mandela"-bridge). How beautiful the lights shimmer and how majestically the aluminated Eusebius-tower sticks out above everything else.

Nightlife Spot: Swing (café)

Not many discotehques, café's, dancings and bars stand the test of time. Names change continuously as well as owners and often the style that a certain place brings. One however stood the test of time since 1977, which is in quickly changing nightlife and musical scene an amazing achievement. I am therefor proud to say that in the early days of this dancing / nightclub, I used to be present each weekend, dancing the night away on the lovely sound of 80-ies music.

Nightlife Spot: Alleys surrounding the Korenmarkt

The Korenmarkt itself has it's café's and open space with terraces, however surrounding the Korenmarkt is a cluster of nightlife spots in the many little alleys, such as the "Tullekensteeg". From door to door café's, bars, dancings, discotheques and a few restaurants are chained up for you. If you won't find your nightlife (G-)spot here, you won't find it anywhere! Recommendations:

Nightlife Spot: "Varkensstraat" = Pigs street

Running between Eurocinema and the shopping Janssstraat is the "Varkensstraat" (Pigs street ). Here one finds "Manhattan", my favourite discotheque. This place also is already there since I can remember and still quite a popular place to dance the night away. It is one of few places with a night permit, something stupid that the Arnhem city council did decide (opening normally until 02:00 o'clock, but discotheques, dancings with a nightpermit are allowed to stay open until 05:00). However, in these places real nightlife only starts after midnight and will be often overcrowded after the other café's, bars and dancings close. From 03:00, dancing is restricted to the 35 square centimeters that you stand on (-:

Nightlife Spot: Rembrandt Theatre, Euro Cinema, Het Filmhuis

Of corse Arnhem offers also the possibilities to go to the movies or "een filmpje pakken" ("catch a film" - as we say). We used to have several smaller cinema's, but now have two large ones with several large and less large rooms. Rembrandt Theatre is one, the other is called Euro Cinema or in the people mouths "De Blikken Bioscoop" (the Tincan Cinema). Here all starfilms are presented. Does one want to see an art, cult (or "B") film, then in the middle of the Korenmarkt is the "Filmhuis" (House of film).

Nightlife Spot: Joint Venture and other coffeshops

For those visiting Arnhem on behalve of their "Dutch" holiday in which they can't seperate the reality with the stories that go in some foriegn countries. No, Dutch do not take a joint for breakfast and are not constinuously stoned. We however have a very "soft" drugs policy. This means that one is allowed to have a certain (personal) amount of softdrugs with one. Officially selling in public of larger amounts is forbidden. Coffeeshops are - moer or less - the exception and here one can get a joint to try. Do not take "***" on the street, as it is not only forbidden, it is also often of dubious quality. In Arnhem there are several coffeeshops, one situated close to the nightlife centre "De Korenmarkt". This is "Joint Venture". So if you want to get higher then a "Vlaamse Papagaai" (a local bird) ... Nightlife Spot: De Katoenclub

"De Katoenclub", when you translate it you will immediately understand what it's all about: The Cottonclub.
Indeed, this is THE Jazz-club in Arnhem that offers every weekend live on stage jazz (and motown) performances from local as well as international guests. The atmosphere is great and the club is always packed with jazz-lovers.

Nightlife Spot: 5th avenue

Great relatively new dance place on the nightlife square of Arnhem, the Korenmarkt. It's inside an old Lutherian church (mark the swan above the entrance) and now is a true temple of all ages and classes. First floor is a cafe, middle floor holds a few dining tables and on the top floor the music is making everyone dance 'til the early hours of the morning. Sadly enough at 2:00 hours it's closing time (no night permit here).
