My favourit restaurant in Arnhem: Sakura - Arnhem

My favourit restaurant in Arnhem: Sakura

Sakura: For sushi and tepanyaki you go to:

This - exclusive and thus quite expensive restaurant - is my favourit in Arnhem. Sakura (cherryblossom) might not be an original name, but it was one of the first Japanese restaurants within The Netherlands. Since then I am enjoying tepanyaki and also a few sushi-treats there on occasional basis.

The Pauwstraat with many good restaurants - Arnhem

The Pauwstraat with many good restaurants

"Pauwstraat" (Peacock street): Collection of fine and stylish restaurants

Connecting the Korenmarkt with the Jans (shopping) street is a short road called "Pauwstraat" (Peacock street). On both sides of this street one can find fine restaurants with all their own cosy atmosphere. There's for example "Pst Amigo" (Mexican), "Grand Royal" (Bourgondian) and as well "La Habana" (Cuban / Caribic). The street has gotten lately a very green character when the city decided to plant trees here. In summer terraces are placed in the street, turning it into a buzzing nightlife spot. In shrill contrast to the good restaurants stands the "Febo", which can easily be considered the worst snack counter chain of The Netherlands.

Hidden in the greens of the park "De Palatijn" - Arnhem

Hidden in the greens of the park "De Palatijn"

"De Palatijn": High tea in the "Sonsbeek"-park

Nothing is more tasty then a high tea after a wonderful walk. The Sonsbeek park is the most beautiful place to walk in nature and offers some of the most spectacular views over Arnhem. Waterfalls, long lanes with huge trees, laying greens and mighty forest as well as a cultivated art garden. The "Palatijn" is a cosy teahouse in the midst of these settings. A great place for a afternoon tea with scones, sandwiches or - for the lover - pies and sweets.

La Rusticana, for those who love Italian food - Arnhem

La Rusticana, for those who love Italian food

La Rusticana: Best Italian Restaurant in town with a secret

In the "Bakkerstraat" (Bakers street) one can find the best Italian restaurant in Arnhem. La Rusticana serves a wide variety of Italian "cuisine" variating from a list of Pizza's to the finest Carpaccio and Pasta's. The restuarant offers several cosy rooms with all their own style. The secret can be enjoyed in summertime, when the backgarden is open and one can dine under wineleaves and large trees. As this garden is in the centre of town, it is a strange awareness being in such green hidden place.

Dutch fries with satésauce and "mexicano" - Arnhem

Dutch fries with satésauce and "mexicano"

The Snackbar: Do like the Dutch: snack, snack, snack

Snackbars, you will find them everywhere. In the citycentre on several streetcorners and in the suburbs always at local shoppingcentres. Yes, it's fastfood and unhealthy, but ... well, it's also easy (fast) and (according to me) deliscious.

Favorite Dish: Snacks, with on top the French Fries, though there actualy is nothing French about them. Legend goes that somewhere in the Southern Lowlands (now Flandres) in the medieval battles a sack of potatoes fell into a kettle of hot oil (to throw on the attacking forces that tried to climb the citywalls). As food during sieges was scarce and valuable, one did everything to get the potatoes out again, which finally succeeded. Fried potatoes were invented!
Furthermore there is an amazing variety of fried snacks in The Netherlands. Kroket, frikandel, nasi/bamischijf, lihanboutje, berehap, bitterbal, kipcorn etc. etc. If you're here and go hungry, stop and try them.

Pannekoeken, delisciously simple. - Arnhem

Pannekoeken, delisciously simple.

In the Netherlands you have to eat Pancakes!

Best pancake-restaurant, more typical Dutch I cannot imagine, is in Arnhem North at the 'Koningsweg'.
Another good one, 'De Steenen Camer' is at the Drielsedijk in Arnhem South. However, there are many more in and around the town.

Favorite Dish: Pancake with ham and ... of course ... Dutch cheese (preferably Old Amsterdam or Young Maaslander).
