Capitol of Northern Brabant, a wonderful town | The gothic masterpieces on the Saint Jan-cathedral |
Den Bosch, or full name 's Hertogenbosch is a warmhearted historical town that breaths the (North)Brabant spirit everywhere. The town is build in a swamp, where the little rivers "Dieze", "Dommel" and "Aa" approach the larger one, the: "Maas" (Meuse). Here a fortress lay strategically with the water as an defensive system, that however didn't prevent several sieges and not seldomly ending in the fall and plundering of the town. Main reason was that Den Bosch was in a conflictive region where various Dukedoms bordered one another (Kleef, Guelderland and Brabant). The town has a monumental centre with old houses built alongside and over the little rivers and canals that run through the town. Largest of all monuments is the only real cathedral in The Netherlands: the Saint Jan (=John), which is clearly built in different timeframes as for the use of Roman and Gothic style straight through one another. The interior is stunningly decorated and the silouet of the church is visible from afar. |
