Hidden away in a corner way back

Australia has it's "Outback" ... in The Netherlands there is a part that is called the "Achterhoek" which litterally translated means "the corner behind". This part of Gelderland is indeed preserved in a way that we now-a-days only can be very happy with. An agricultural area that hides many castles and mansions, a wonderful way of traditions and a mixed landscape of small forests, fields, acres, creeks, canals and rivers as well as monumental farmhouses and cosy little villages. Laag Keppel is a good example of all that.

A part that is still how it used to be

Laag Keppel is situated roughly between the largest town in the Achterhoek: Doetinchem, and the mustardtown Doesburg. from the mainroad nothing special as even the castle is quite hidden in the green surrounding. Go of the road either way into the village and be surprised by it's secrets.

And of course it has (now) a windmill

In the 19th century Laag Keppel decided that a windmill is a must for such complete little Dutch treasure. This "Spinnekop" (Spiderhead) windmill was imported from Friesland in that time.

How wonderful to ring and make an appointment to see a castle... very untouristy.:-) The countryside and people sound wonderful. Amazing what is right under our noses.. I'm glad you discovered it.
