You only need to walk a few kilometres and will see one historical wonder after another in the innertown of Gent (Gand). Wonderfully preserved and restaurated the buildings of Saint Bhaaf's cathedral, the Belfort and "Lakenhal" (former hall where the famous Flandres textile "laken" was traded) and Saint Nicolas-church form a perfect row of towers that can be viewed best at the bridge near the Saint Michael's Abbey. From here you also have a magical view along the "Graslei", a row of old canalhouses that can be considered the most beautiful in the world. Again a short walk will bring you to the castle/fortress of the "Gravensteen", which in those days must have seemed to be invincible.
