Lier, picking up history in the streets | The top-attraction in Lier: Zimmer's clocktower |
Lier, compressed between large diamants as Antwerp(en) and Brussel(s) as well overshaded by it's direct neighbor Mechelen, is still for me the place that I like to be most. It is so comfortably compact that it's also a joy in getting there, parking your car and just walk for a few hours to breath in the history that is hanging in the streets and alleys, between the houses that seem to all be older then several centuries. This place is a joy for the eyes as well as it is for the mouths. Restaurants, cafe's and bars are inviting you in on every corner and square. Deliscious Belgian beer and a lunch with Belgian fries (who ever took the word "French" or the relation with this country in his/her mouth should be boiled in hot oil). Belgian have a great taste, given to them by birth (at least that's how it seems as where-ever you eat, it's making your mouth water only when food is prepared or presented on your table. Lier has all that Flanders represents and the highlight I will give in my tips on this page, as well as a little review around the wonderful houses, the Saint Gummarus-church and of course ... the Zimmer-tower with it's astronomical clock. |
