On the other side of the Rhine

Off the beaten track in Germany

Burg Odenhausen, one of many castles in Wachtberg
While the masses are attracted towards the Siebengebirge (Seven Mountainrange) and it's attractions along the river Rhine, we took our base just a little further inland from the main tourist area in Wachtberg. The village Wachtberg is actually a quite strange conglomeration of several villages spread throughout the hills West of the river Rhine South of Bonn. The region is between the last hills of the Eiffel (semi-mountainous area along the Belgian border) and the Siebengebirge, a semi-mountainous area across the Rhine. The pleasant slow slopes of these hills, make Wachtberg a great bicycling paradise, with as highlight a tour along the westbanks of the Rhine.

Wachtberg ... which Wachtberg do you mean?

As said, Wachtberg consists of a conglomeration of many villages, forming the regin Wachtberg. Such as there are:
Wachtberg-Berkum, Wachtberg-Liessem, Wachtberg-Werthhoven, Wachtberg-Gimmersdorf, Wachtberg-Oedingen, Wachtberg-Holzem, Wachtberg-Oberbachem, Wachtberg-Niederbachem, Wachtberg-Fritzdorf, Wachtberg-Adendorf, Wachtberg-Kuerrighoven, Wachtberg-Pech, Wachtberg-Villip, Wachtberg-Villiprot ... do I say more?

Fruit basket of the German midland

Together with the Meckenheim area, Wachtberg is the fruitbasket of mid Germany and offers wide orchards of apple, pear, cherry, prune trees, as well as orchards for various kinds of berries (black, red, blue etc.) plus wide fields of strawberries. The furtile soil (once this area was filled with small vulcanoes) and pleasant climate, already centuries ago made the fruit sector strong in these hills. Recent technologies and new growing techniques have staggered production to provide large parts of Germany with their sweet fruits.
