  • Twin Peaks has one, if not the best, view of San Francisco. (one of my other favorites is Tiburon, up in Marin County past Sausalito) it is a quick drive up from Market Street, and chances are you won’t spend too much time looking at the view because it is usually very cool and windy there. But I would suggest visiting this place two times, once at night and again during the day.

Go down Market, away from the Embarcadero, past Castro a couple miles, make right on Twin Peaks. go all the way up.

    enjoy.

But be aware that even if it is not foggy in the city, it may be foggy here.

GOLDEN GATE PARK: Golden Gate Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • Golden Gate Park is a great city park filled with all sorts of good stuff. You can either join the sun-worshippers in the meadows, or take a walk / bike ride along the trails to one of the many picturesque “lakes” (ponds) and maybe end up at Ocean Beach watching the surfers. Sunday is the most popular day to visit because the city closes the main road to cars. About 75,000 take a visit here every weekend - there’s good reason.

GOLDEN GATE PARK: Golden Gate Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • GG Park has a lot more to offer besides taking the dog for a walk or getting some exercise. Here are some of the things to see and do:

    Museums & Gardens
    California Academy of Sciences
    Japanese Tea Gardens
    Strybing Arboretum

    Sport Activities
    Archery
Basketball (in panhandle of park – far east)
Biking and Skating (you can rent)
    Fly-fishing ponds
    Golf (9 hole)
    Lawn Bowling
    Surfing
    Ultimate Frisbee
Boat renting or fishing at Stow Lake
    Model Boats on Spreckels Lake

    Other Sites
Bison Padlock (yup – there’s Bison here)
    AIDS Memorial Grove
Strawberry Hill (view of park and City, 400+ ft high)

Cliff House: Ocean Beach & Cliff House

  • San Francisco Cliff House
  • Cliff House overlooking Ocean Beach

  • Where Golden Gate Park meets the waves is called Ocean Beach. It is not exactly the most scenic beach, but for being located smack dab in a major city… what do you expect?

Just on the North Side of the beach is the famous Cliff House Restaurant. I’ve heard mixed reviews, but never have been. I guess you are paying for more of the name and location than the food. Not my style. The more scenic ocean landscape is beyond the Cliff House at Lands End and China Beach, in my humble opinion.

Bay / Beaches: Land End in Lincoln Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you continue to follow the ocean North (east) from Ocean Beach you will soon hit Lincoln Park and eventually China beach (in the Sea Cliff neighborhood), and eventually the Presidio. All part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

I want to say this is an old Navy turret post, where big cannons once stood. Now it is a park where flowers grow. Typical San Francisco.

    Bay / Beaches: China Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • Nestled in the VERY EXPENSIVE neighborhood of Seacliff, is China Beach. Seacliff is where many of the rich and famous live. Needless to say, nice homes. Buy I like the beach better. Great view of the Bridge.
