Beaches: Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk: Spectacular Scenery

The Bondi Beach to Bronte Beach Coastal Walk is spectacular, with dramatic cliff tops to small, intimate beaches. This walk is a great, invigorating experience. The walk is approx 2.5kms one way, medium grade and with some steps. Picnic areas and most beaches have BBQs, kiosks and toilets. If you just want to walk one way (doesn't sound far, but is a little more adventurous than it sounds) you can catch the 378 bus back to Bondi Junction.

Tree-lined walkways, fountains, statues, speakers corner, chess, War Memorial... this park is diverse in its contents as it is in the people it attracts. I recommend going there on a sunny day and take some lunch and go lie on the grass and take a bit of timeout from the hustle & bustle of the city.

Water Taxis operate in and around Sydney Harbour. They are a great way to transfer from places, for example, from Circular Quay to the beautiful Watsons Bay. You get great views, friendly driver & speedy transfer. Alternatively, you can get one for a sightseeing tour. Compared to bus or train or road taxi, it is more expensive, so it makes sense to do this with 2 or more people. Maximum people is usually 6. A trip from Watsons Bay to Circular Quay (for example) is AUD$50 - But its such a beautiful experience, especially on a sunshiney day!

The Rocks is one of the most-visited parts of Sydney. It is not hard to see why. Nestled at the foot of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and on the western shores of Sydney Cove, The Rocks is the foundation place of Sydney and Australia, and of enormous historical signifiance. It is often described as "Sydney's outdoors museum". The Rocks is the oldest area of Sydney and has recently undergone an amazing metamorphosis, the old district being transformed into a vibrant pocket of cafes and restaurants and interesting tourist shops and stalls. This has been achieved without destroying the area's Old World charm and historic buildings. Sydney's town planners have put in place a sensitive conservation program that has preserved the heritage and character of The Rocks and brought about an interesting fusion of modern amenities in an old and valued setting. Most activities centre around walking, looking and eating. The Rocks is Sydney's oldest preserved colonial district so the main emphasis is on the historical importance of the area. The Sydney Visitor Centre, at 106 George Street, is a logical and excellent starting point. This centre has a wealth of information on points of interest around The Rocks and provides free information and literature, as well as having souvenirs and momentos that can be purchased.

Beaches: Bondi Beach - you've all heard of it

So you think what trip to Sydney would be complete without a trip to Bondi Beach? Well, you are right. However, just a warning not to expect a little paradise of a beach. Bondi is very developed and built up and has apartments, restaurants, bars & clubs built all around it. Its a constant people parade with flexing muscles and improving tans. If you're not into that scene (or just a bit scared of the harsh Australian sun) I would recommend going there for an early evening meal, a walk along the promenade & if you behaved, an ice-cream. If/when you are beaching it at Bondi, make sure you try both North & South ends of the beach. They seem to have sub-cultures at each end. South is more travellers, low profile locals & surfers. North is more posers, muscle guys & young families. There are plenty of good ones in this area! A favourite is DEFINITELY 'Blue Orange' on Hall Street, Bondi. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner ALL scrumptious.

Most likely when you come to Sydney, the weather will be warm enough for swimming. Because one has so many options of where to go swimming, it can be quite confusing! If you don't mind a bit of people-watching and crowded beach, I recommend Manly, Bondi, Palm Beach or Tamarama. If you prefer something a bit more down-to-earth but still want a surf beach, then perhaps Coogee or one of my favourite surf beaches, Freshwater. However, if you are after no surf but still a beautiful view then I have to recommend my absolute favourite... Camp Cove. It's a harbour beach located just by Watsons Bay. It has a beautiful outlook, clear water, not too big, not too small, great swimming, good angle because you get the very last sunshine of the day and best of all, not too many people know about it. Uh oh, I could be in trouble for letting the secret out!! There is also good rock-climbing & diving around Camp Cove, but more details on that in Sports tips. Parking can be tricky on hot, Summer days because of the local harbour-side pub, but you'll find something, somehow. Happy beaching!

Directions: Drive out to Watsons Bay, down to the park on Military Road, keep going straight ahead until you have to go left. At that point, you'll see a big sign to CAMP COVE. You can't miss it.

You'll probably end up very near the Sydney Botanic Gardens, but like many visitors you could easily miss it! It's nestled amongst the surrounding green, manicured grass that line the harbour foreshore on the eastern side of the Opera House. Inside the gates of the Botanic Gardens, there is a plethora of Australian flora.. succulents, palms, fruit... and of course these attract many birds too. A great place to stroll through on a sunny Sydney day, amongst the rainforest-like trees. Especiallu good for young famalies, bird-watchers, plant enthusiasts and romantics!! A good place to escape the hustle & bustle of the city. Entry is free. They open 6.30am and close at sunset daily.

Things To Do: Harbourside walk Cremorne Point to Mosman Bay

Jump on a ferry from Circular Quay to Cremorne Point. As you step off the ferry, look around and breathe it in. It's good, but it gets better. Take the harbourside path that goes West (towards the harbour bridge) and admire harbourside homes, community pool, happy picnic-ers, joggers and generally, just enjoy this picturesque walk. For a less known view of Sydney harbour, walk East (away from the harbour bridge) and you'll find lookouts that provide a good spot to view all the boats on Sydney harbour. Friday night yacht races are great to watch. Then continue walking around the path, past manicured gardens (I dare you to go off the main path, there are great little "pixie paths" that lead down to the waters edge) and eventually end up at Mosman Bay, where you may catch a ferry back to Circular Quay. Or maybe you like it so much you want to stay...
