Been here twice and loved it. Stayed on the coast at the Blue Marlin Hotel in a place called Malindi. Great for diving, beautiful beaches and very unusual entertainment. Kenya is a third world country so once you step outside the hotel you are in a different world. The locals are friendly but tourists are an obvious target. You might as well carry a sign "I've got loads of money" because understandably you are a soft target for anyone on the make..............I went to Malindi with a good mate. We were accosted by these two street hawkers Abraham and Zack. Many Kenyans seem to have bizarre biblical names. They wanted to show us around the shops and markets. If you buy anything from these shops they earn a commission for bringing you there. Street hawkers can be a pest at the best of times but in the spirit of having the craic we made out we were Russians with zero English. Had the best laugh watching these two guys struggling to explain everything to us in mimes and the two of us barking back random Russian things like 'kremlin', 'glasnost', 'perestroika' etc. They sussed us out the next day and saw the funny side of it too. Amazing how a free beer lifts the spirits............................
Not sure about travelling to Kenya at present. There's been some serious civil unrest in Kenya and tourist numbers have declined. Still! that might mean there are plenty of cheap deals..........................
This is the Blue Marlin Hotel. 10/10 for service and for ingenious entertainment. Masia warrior dancing, Disco Dave, the stetson wearing Kenyan John Denver, the unforgettable Miss Malindi contest and more. They were all good but bad at the same time. Had me in stitches.
