UNDER CONSTRUCTION. ....

We spent about a day of our trip in the Fox Glacier/Franz Josef region.
We decided to stay overnight in Fox Glacier, as the township seemed (from the guide books) to be a little smaller and less touristy, and it should have been so....but how could we have known that a cycling race with about 600 participants would have taken over the town for that particular night! (Bike Victoria, from nearby in our home state in Australia no less!)

Fortunately we'd pre booked accommodation in a cabin in a Holiday Park - where we were surrounded by 2 tent cities made up of cyclists.

In the afternoon, we visited the Glacier, but didn't climb the trail to the start of the ice.

The following morning after our arrival the cyclists were fortunately up earlier than us and departing.

So, we had a fairly quiet walk at Lake Matheson ahead of us, judging by the only half dozen or so cars in the carpark when we arrived.

And these photos are what we saw at the first lookout point after we'd been walking for about 30 minutes.

And Fox Glacier itself.

• Pros:Beautiful setting, a bit less touristy and overpriced than Fox Glacier
• Cons:The few only restaurants very pricy, cafes a bit too trendy for me
• In a nutshell:Beautiful mountains, spectacular Lake Matheson, sporting activities galore
