The city of Adelaide was named after Queen Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, wife of William IV of Germany (named I assume by one of the many hundreds of German settlers who arrived in South Australia in the 1830s)
Adelaide is one of my favourite Australian cities with a layout I really admire. Driving through it it is so easy and feels more like a large country town than quite a large city. The streets are extremely well l laid out (unlike the rabbit warren of some of Sydney's streets, and the confusing one way streets of Hobart). Much of central Adelaide is in square grid fashion with parks in the centres) |
| | Parks There are many other nice parks and open spaces in Adelaide. It is quite a green city, with beautiful neighbouring hillside scenery of the Adelaide Hills and Barossa Valley.
The Torrens River flows through part of the city and almost right to the door of the Adelaide Zoo. Here we see one of the tourist cruises on the river in flat topped "Popeye" boats. |
| Example of Adelaide's stone architecture |
| | The City of Churches Adelaide is known as the City of Churches, for its many fine stone churches.
There is also much other stone architecture, which I really like. There are many grand heritage style buildings, including the Adelaide Casino.
The very large amount of stone usage in buildings and houses throughout the city I believe almost surpasses even Hobart, Australia's 2nd established city. As far as cities with intact heritage buildings go, it also seems fairly equal with Hobart. Unlike some other Australian capital cities where the new can dominate over old, in Adelaide I feel that both achieve a good balance. |
