Canberra...home of politicians and.....?

Under construction......

My first visit to Australia's capital.....

I'd been told by just about everyone I met that Canberra was a strange city and a strange capital...but I tried to keep an open mind anyway and take it as I found it.
My first impressions....nice wide roads and good freeways around the city....once inside the city itself, it seemed strangely empty for a weekday and we found ourselves driving around and around before we found we were actually in the city centre already, though it looked more like a business district than any shopping district.
We found driving out to the suburbs more interesting, where we found some interesting shops and shopping centres and easier parking.

Here is one picture of the city centre - the nicest one I could find. I was a bit disappointed with the architecture of our nation's capital so many plain, concrete buildings - even the national gallery is a large grey/white concrete building - really not much to look at on the outside at all.

One surprise for me was discovering that Canberra is situated on a very large lake, Lake Burley Griffin, which is quite attractive (though the foreshore doesn't seem to be used for much).

Pros:"It was lively on the day we were there, due to a festival, lucky!"
Cons:"not much sign of life in the centre of the city usually, many ugly grey concrete buildings"
In A Nutshell:"As odd as I'd been warned to expect....but the multicultural festival was great!"

Lizards in the capital...indeed a bit a strange capital. Btw if you would ask people in Belgium what is the capital..most would answer sydney.

The sex shop tip is very helpful indeed! And I am glad to notice they believe sex to be less dangerous than fireworks!!!! LOL Although I sometimes see fireworks in sex too. But I guess they can't forbid these ones !!!!!!
