Salamanca Markets.: Salamanca Place
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • The buildings here were originally Georgian warehouses, built between 1835 - 50. There is much colonial architecture remaining still intact in the older areas of Hobart.
Now the buildings in Salamanca Place are home to bars, cafes and Australian and international restaurants, and quality arts/crafts centres, souvenir shops and more. It's quite a unique place to visit.

On Saturdays Salamanca is home to Tasmania's largest outdoor market - a mixture of crafts, local wares and other unique goods. Don't miss this one!

    Suburbs.: Battery Point
  • Tip Rating:
  • Battery Point is an absolute must see in Hobart.

It's one of the oldest areas of Hobart, with many beautiful Georgian cottages and some quaint old shop buildings.
As you can see, it's hilly and also has very good views of the river and mountains.

  • I just love the Georgian houses in and around Battery Point. Many were built in the 1840's.
It's a style very hard to find (if not almost impossible) remaining in Australia outside Tasmania.

    Museums.: Maritime Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • We found this a most informative and worthwhile museum. It gave us a better feel of Hobart and especially its history, which we didn't have until we went here.
The tour is self guided with printed out information, so you can wander through at your leisure.

  • Inside the shot tower

  • This tower is where they used to make lead shot.

My husband, who ISN'T afraid of heights, enjoyed this place and took this photo looking down inside the tower from the top.

    Suburbs.: Casino
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • The Wrest Point Casino is at Sandy Bay, overlooking the Yacht club. There are great views right over Hobart and the surrounding mountains.

Forestier, Tasman Peninsula / Port Arthur.: Tessellated Pavement - Forestier Peninsula
  • Tip Rating:
  • Hobart Forestier, Tasman Peninsula / Port Arthur.
  • Tessellated Pavement
  • by Kate-Me
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • The Tessellated pavement on the Forestier Peninsula was not mentioned in any of my guide books. We just found it as a dot on our old map, and signposted when we got to Tasman?s arch.
It was well worth the couple of kms detour from there to see. From the bottom of the small cliffs to the edge of the water in quite a long strip, the pavement stretches, looking for all the world like evenly sized man-cut cobble stones, but it?s completely natural.

Forestier, Tasman Peninsula / Port Arthur.: Tasman's Arch
  • Tip Rating:
  • I just loved the scenery here, even though it wasn't marked as a major tourist attraction on the map.
Water flows here through a gap into the cliff into a round rock walled enclosure they call the 'Devil's Cauldron'.
