CHICAGO - THE FRIENDLY MELTINGPOT It's long years ago that I visited Chicago and stayed there for couple of months. As a European first ever coming to the States, the skyline, the magnificent mile along the Michigan Lake and the melting pot of nationalities living there impressed me from the start. Chicago may be a bit more the expression of provincial America, compared to NY.,but it's perhaps more friendly and original. Remember the leisure activities in the docks near Michigan Lake, where each weekend another nationality(Poles,Irish.German ,Chinese etc) had their big party, started by an impressive parade in downtown. They all danced there and had a great time, not counting national and racial differences. And after the party was over ,they returned home by the shores of the Lake, holding balloons on which their forenames where written with phosphorous colours. In the dark you saw only their names gliding to the sky. Then I understood better the meaning of meltingpot ,that all felt like members of the same nation and community, despite some differences between them. This might be a subjective opinion, some may even argue that things are not that simple even in friendly Chicago, what I accept partially.Nevertheless, for me as an European, this friendly get together ,even if not perfect, could be a model for better understanding in a Europe with still many contradictions and wrongly sustained nationalistic prides, which might lead to conflicts. |
