Pleasant interior seating in a warm family-style restaurant with large menu selection that's sure to please any tastebud. It's right near Centraal Station on Damrak so the site is an ideal people watching hotspot. Prices are reasonable, service is fantastic, and if you enjoy great food, don't miss this place.

Favorite Dish: I chose the Mixed Grill for an early dinner. Good variety, paired it with a rode wijn, flesje water, and then ended with a mokka. All that for under 20 euro.

Oud Holland: Home style Dutch cooking

Tastefully decorative Dutch restaurant that caters to large groups.

I wasn't in a large group, in fact, I was all alone.
This restaurant was my first experience at European dining where I was offered seating with complete strangers who were also dining alone.
For an American, this could be a bit of a shock, but I am more than happy to tell you we 'american's' should adopt this civility.
It was so much fun dining with other tourists from all over the world--each with their own tales to tell--that I sat for nearly five hours listening to each. Understanding each other was at times a challenge, but that made it even more rewarding.
The restaurant itself was a charm, and it's menu is varied. I did not get experimental here, which I now regret, but selected the old standby beef option. I was not disappointed in the least.
If you've heard that Dutch cuisine is bland or not palatable in any way, ignore thee dreadful sinner....I savored truly exceptional Dutch cuisine throughout Amsterdam for an entire week and long for my next visit.
By the way......Anyone know what those deep fried, fast-food style egg-roll-like meat treats are called? If you're a tourist you've gotta try 'em....they are fantastic!

Favorite Dish: Reservations advisable, unless you're alone, then just step in and enjoy...

Excelsior (Hotel de l'Europe): Most extravagant...and worth every euro.
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Restaurant Name: Excelsior

If you like to overindulge, get suited up in proper attire with a dinner jacket and tie, or formal evening wear for the ladies, then this is your spot for an evening of dining extravagance.
The formal atmosphere inside this culinary delight is total elegance.
    Advance reservations advised.
Prepare for an elaborate dining experience as you are entertained by the passing of those glass domed tour boats and other vessels along one of the most picturesque canals in all Amsterdam.

In this photo, Excelsior is in the foreground on the right, its lights casting their orange glow on the water during koninginnedag.
    (bon appétit)
