City of the Hapsburg Dynasty

Votivkirche
Timeline: (1278 - 1918)

1278 - Hapsburg Ruling Empire founded. (640 years)

1493 - 1519 - Emporer Maximilian I

1740 - 1765 Empress Maria Theresa

1848 - 1916 Emporer Franz Josef

Some Interesting History:
Maximilian I:
Emporer who started the Hapsburg World Empire through marriage contracts, which gained control of the Burgundy region of Northern France. His son married into Spanish Royal family leading to rule over Spain, Naples and Spanish America.
Also, In 1498, Maximilian contracted the services of 12 young male choristers to sing with his court orchestra, giving rise to The Vienna Boy's Choir.
Maria Theresa:
Empress who ruled following the Austrian's defeat of the Turks.
One of her daughters (she had 14 children, 12 survived) was the reknowned, Marie Antoinette, who married into French Royalty (Louis XVI) of the Bourbon family. Effectively made France an ally. Unfortunately it cost Marie, as we know, her head during the French Revolution.
Empress Maria also welcomed the boy-Mozart into her court.
Emporer Franz Josef
From 1857 through 1865, the Emporer had the bastions surrounding Vienna's Old Town (Innere Stadt) demolished and created the boulevard known as the Ring. Within the Ring are Vienna's most cherished sites, including St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom) and the Imperial Palace (Hofburg).

Hapsburg - The music lovers

As far back as the 12th century, Vienna has been a favorite for musicians, including: Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms and Mahler, all of whom settled in Vienna.

The Hapsburg family of rulers were each, in their own right, music lovers. Leopold I was a composer, Charles VI was a violinist, Maria Theresa played double bass.

In 1815, Vienna became "The Waltz Capital of the World" due almost entirely by the influence of Johann Strauss and his brood.

The Flavors of the Viennese

Coffee, coffee and more coffee....
Probably, the Coffee Capital of The World, too.
When ordering remember these:
Mocca - black
Kleiner (or Grosser)-with a little milk.
Melange - with a little more milk
Einspänner - mocca with whipped cream (my personal fav)
