Romans avoid this northern soggy wetland and occupy southern Holland.
1204 -
Gijsbrecht van Amstel builds his castle.
1270 -
The River Amstel is dammed at Dam Square, leading town to adopt the name Aemstelledamme.
1275
Count Floris V grants Aemstelldamme toll privilege charter and limited independance, (to the anger and dismay of Amstel).
He in turn murders Floris V at Muiden. Amstel's estates are confiscated by the Bishop of Utrecht and given to the Counts of Holland.
1300
Amsterdam receives city rights.
1313 - 1342
Amsterdam is granted full municipal rights, William III of Holland rules Amsterdam.
1421
St Elizabeth's Day Flood occurs along with Amsterdam's first great fire.
1452
Fire destroys most wooden houses, making stone and slate building mandatory.

Eighty-year war with Spain begins, Prince of Orange annexes the city.

England and The Netherlands go to war as Louis XIV of France invades Netherlands.
