Taking public transportation: 'Gypsy Thieves' are everywhere. They can steal using numerous types of diversion tactics. You best bet is to mind your own business even if you see someone 'having a heart attack', 'beating a child' or 'struggling with their baggage'. It only takes 30 seconds for someone else to reach into your pocket or slice your purse strap. Keep the zippers to purse covered with your hand or your hand in your pocket, covering your wallet.

Look every way before crossing the street! People will come from every direction on a bike, moped or in a car. Just because the light is red doesn't mean that they will actually 'see' it. The best bet is to follow the lights as they change. Don't try that last minute spring across the street because you might not see that bus coming around the corner.

Some people will be very bold with their attempts to pity your money out of you. Beggars are notious for keeping a mangy, starving dog with them, in hopes that the inner animal lover will shell out a couple of thousand lire to feed the poor thing. If that doesn't work, they may take their children to your table as you are dining in an outdoor restuarant. It makes it very hard to eat with a bony six year old, holding out a dirty hand over your plate. It may sound cold, but by giving them money, you aren't exactly helping them out.
