| Jasna Gora - The Bright Mountain |
I was last in Czestochowa in 1976 as part of a Polish tour I made with my family.
That's more than a quarter of a century ago, but I can still picture the Jasna Gora monastery and the Basilica of the Virgin Mary vividly. This was the first site of pilgrimage I had ever visited and, not being a religious person myself (at that time), I found the entire place unbelievable. Donations and relics from pilgrims over the centuries seem to cover every inch of space. Crutches hung on walls; jewellery was displayed in cabinets, incredible riches ostentatiously on display. I've never seen anything like it before, or since. |
