We took a Fall day-trip to the island of Martha's Vineyard in October. If you are visiting the Boston area, consider spending a day or 2 on the Vineyard - especially in the off-season, when the crowds go away. Breath-taking beaches, charming gingerbread cottages, reliable old lighthouses, cute antique and craft shops, comfy coffee houses & diners and fine cuisine await you.
You can see a lot of the highlights of the island in a day, but if you want to see it all, plan on spending at least 3 days. For a great, relaxing vacation, spend a week or two.
It takes about 90 minutes to reach the ferry in Woods Hole from Boston. Woods Hole is the main jumping off point to the island. There is plenty of parking in Woods Hole - leave your car behind. There is excellent bus service all over the Vineyard, and plenty of bike rentals too.
High season on the Vineyard is late May through early September. I think the perfect time to visit is late September to early October, when the weather is still pleasant and you can get a table at just about any cafe or restaurant without a wait. |
