For some reason, VT doesn't list two great locations in Germany: Bamberg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Rothenberg (pictured above) is an old medieval walled town. It's touristy, but shouldn't be missed. I've been there twice and stayed inside the walls at great pensions for about $20 USD per person including breakfast.

Bamberg has an excellent Old Town but is not as touristy as Rothenburg: people actually live and work there. I spent the most memorable New Years Eve of my life there!
