| Beach at Placencia, Belize |
In May 2003, we spent a week in Belize. We flew into Belize City, but didn't spend any time there. We headed inland to San Ignacio for a few days, then south east to the coast and spent a couple of days in Hopkins, then south again to Placencia.
San Ignacio is great for outdoor activities. There's plenty to do: canoeing, kayaking, hiking, tubing, caving, exploring Mayan ruins - just for starters.
Hopkins is a one-street beach town. Very laid back. There's a few dive operations for scuba or snorkeling and the Cockscomb Basin nature reserve is very close for hiking, river-tubing or swimming under a waterfall.
Placencia is a backpacker hangout that's starting to become a resort area. There's scuba diving, inland river & jungle tours and of course plenty of lazing on the beach.
Please see my tips for each city under Belize for more detailed information. |
