Restaurant Name: The Hannah Jack Tavern
The Hannah Jack Tavern in Merrimack, NH. The building really is a genuine antique. It is divided into small, intimate rooms with about 4 tables each. Some rooms have a fireplace. The restaurant has been in business for well over 20 years - at least, that's how long my family has been frequenting it. I just recently ate there after a long absence and everything was just as I remembered it! UPDATE: Unfortunately, the Hannah Jack closed when the owners decided to retire! So sad! Keeping the tip for sentimental reasons... I wish they had decided to sell instead, but maybe the atmosphere would have changed too much anyway with new owners. Local bakeries still sell the 'Hannah Jack bread' which is a semi-sweet, soft bread filled with raisins and nuts. So delicious! I understand The Common Man restaurant has opened in the old Hannah Jack location. I'll write a review when I get over there. .
Favorite Dish: The prime rib is the best anywhere. The salad bar has very unique and tasty items, and the Hannah Jack is known for its soft loaves of bread made with raisins and nuts. Delicious! .

Restaurant Name: The Mile Away
The Mile Away restaurant specializes in Swiss/German cuisine, but also offers typical American dishes. I like the sausages, schnitzel and bratwurst, but I really love the prime rib! You pay one price for your meal, which includes your salad, soup, main course AND desert and coffee. Portions may look a little small-ish, compared to other restaurants, but once you've finished all of your courses including desert, you do not leave hungry! I find the portion sizes to be perfect and the management is wise in their restraint. The building itself is an old farmhouse with 3 fireplaces. It's nice to eat dinner with a blazing fire nearby! It's a great experience! My only complaint is they close too early. But this is a common problem in NH. They are open for dinner only, Tuesday through Saturday, 5:00 to 9:00 pm, and Sundays, 1:00 to 7:00 pm. This place is a Milford, NH institution! The restaurant has been in business for generations, though I think it may have changed family ownership once or twice. They've has been known to close up temporarily during the slower winter months, so call ahead in wintertime to make sure they're open.
Favorite Dish: Order the prime rib or the wiener schnitzel. You can't go wrong, unless you're a veggie!
