General Tips: Hikers' Delight
  • Tip Rating:

  • Fondest Memory: When I lived in NH, I would hike a portion of the Wapack Trail (http://www.wapack.org/) nearly every weekend. The section I liked the best starts out at the base of the Temple Mt ski area on the Temple/Peterborough line and went south to New Ipswich. There are several peaks along the trail affording exellent views of Mt. Monadnock, Pack Monadnock and the surrounding towns. It's a very peaceful and meditative hike. I miss the convenience of having it 'right in my back yard.'

    General Tips: Fall Color
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Favorite Thing: This comes up a lot in the forums: When is the best time to see the Fall color?

While it's impossible to predict exactly when foliage will be at peak, in general you'll find a lot of color on Columbus Day weekend. Columbus Day is the second Monday in October. The northern mountains may peak a week or two earlier, but you'll probably still see some color there and you'll see plenty in the Monadnock region, the area between Milford and Keene.

If you decide to visit New Hampshire in the Fall, be aware that you will not be alone in your leaf peeping. Expect a little bit of congestion even on secondary roads.

I still mourn the loss of "the old Man"...and my time in Bristol. I'll have to make a trip back some day. Did you ever ski Tenney?

I lived in NH until 3 years ago. The weather there isn't bad, like it was when I was a kid with winter temps below zero most of the time & LOTS of snow. I was very LUCKY to be there! Now I am 3 hrs. to beach & 4 hrs. to Mts. & it's humid as hell in NC!
