  • It was a shame that we only spent one night at this beautiful resort. And even more of a shame that we slept most of the time we were there. We arrived at Johannesburg airport after traveling for 26 hours with only about an hour of sleep, if you could call it that. On top of that, the drive to Sabie took 4 hours. When we arrived, we ate lunch at Smokey's, an eccentric little diner-type restaurant (banana on pizza is yummy!). We asked our waiter where would be a good place to stay, and he made a few suggestions. Then the manager came over and made a few more. I'm not sure who mentioned it, but as we had the names swirling in our heads as we were driving down the road after lunch, we came upon Lone Creek and recognized the name. We pulled into the drive and we sold almost immediately. The grounds are absolutely lovely and the main lodge is a cute and comfortable haven for bleary-eyed travelers. They showed us a room in the main lodge and a detached "cabin" which was the most luxurious cabin I ever saw, fireplace included. We opted for the room in the lodge due to the price advantage. It was certainly the best room we had in our entire stay in South Africa, by far!

Unique Qualities: The entire facility is tastefully decorated leaning towards elegant. The pool is slightly small, but very nicely landscaped. Our room in the lodge had a balcony with view of the pool and a meadow with the creek running through it, with rolling, forested hills in the background. Being on honeymoon, we were happy to have both a shower and a bathtub big enough for two, with scented candles on the ledge right next to the soap!

Lone Creek has rates for self-catering as well as all-inclusive and half-board. We were lucky with our timing. It was slow for them and they asked how much we wanted to pay. We got a great deal, which I think was nearly half-price! R500 included our room for 2 and breakfast.
