Jewel Of The Nodaway River

Underneath a sustained March downpour or on a hot, sunny July afternoon, during a midland heat wave, Clarinda is a town you'll enjoy. It is a miraculously-still-standing town deep in the extreme southwest corner of Iowa. Surrounded by rolling hills and bluffs, Clarinda's corner of Iowa is prettier than most, which can be quite flat and featureless. It rests well beyond the reach of interstates, yet is quite a surprise to see. This part of Iowa used to be more forested, but got an unwanted makeover thanks to the Elm Beetle, which killed probably millions of American trees. Clarinda is my mom's home town, and as a small town, has a more illustrious past, preserved in the small musuem on the southern outskirts of the town. Such small towns have seen their citizens spread far and wide from home, but Clarinda calls its wayward folks back home once a year to the Glenn Miller Festival... Because, as you might guess, famous swing-era bandleader Glenn Miller grew up there and had to do chores there like every other kid. The town has a classic small town layout, complete with town square with beautiful clock tower. Plus the town is so quiet and safe that even at 2 am on a Saturday morning, you can take a long walk by yourself (if you wanted to). All the town's eateries are superb and pure and geniune Americana in unspoiled form. Want to see a short-order waitress roll her eyes when you can't make up your mind whether to go with a hamburger or a Rueben sandwich? Precious!
