Getting TO/AROUND: I bet you'll will repeat this words 100 times a day :) The London Underground is a metro system that covers the Greater London area and beyond. It is an electric railway and, despite its name, runs both above and below ground. It is usually referred to by Londoners as either simply "the Underground" or, more familiarly, "the Tube", owing to the cylindrical shape of its deep-bore tunnels. It is the oldest underground system and one of the three largest in the world. Operations began on 10 January 1863 on the Metropolitan Railway; most of the initial route is now part of the Hammersmith & City Line. The Underground currently serves 274 stations and runs over 253 miles (408 km) of lines. There are also a number of stations and tunnels that are now closed. In 2004–2005, total passenger rides or journeys reached a record level of 976,000,000, an average of 2,670,000 per day.

Buses: London double decker buses

Category: Bus
Getting TO/AROUND: They are really fabulous! The most famous bus of this type, a typical London double-decker bus, seats between 60 and 80 passengers. They are between 10.5 and 10.9 m in length and are a common reference item for describing very large objects; for example, a blue whale is about as long as three double-decker buses. They were created as a means of carrying large numbers of passengers without exceeding legal limits on vehicle length. A particularly iconic example was the Routemaster model bus, which had been a staple of the public transport network in London for nearly half a century following its introduction in 1956. Citing difficulties accommodating disabled passengers, the last remaining examples in use finally retired in 2005, although Transport for London has established two "heritage routes", which will continue using Routemasters. Double-decker buses are common throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Getting TO/AROUND: Taxis look cute here. The first hackney-carriages licenses date from 1662, and applied literally to horse-drawn carriages. During the 20th century cars generally replaced horse-drawn models, and the last horse-drawn hackney carriage ceased service in 1947. In most of the United Kingdom hackney carriage operators use conventional four-door saloon cars, but London (and some other cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh) use specially-designed hackney carriages manufactured by Manganese Bronze. The design of these vehicles allows up to 6 passengers in the back, and holds luggage in the front next to the driver. Some modern designs can also accommodate wheelchairs in the back. Motorised hackney cabs, traditionally all black in colour, have the popular name of black cabs. Despite the name, other colours occur - most frequently when advertising campaigns call for the respraying of large groups of cabs in vivid brand liveries, as in this example of an 'ad campaign'. In London, hackney-carriage drivers have to pass a test called The Knowledge to demonstrate they have an intimate knowledge of London streets.
