Christchurch is the largest city on the South Island of New Zealand with a population of over 300,000 as of 2001. It is located on the edge of the Canterbury plains and is a major stepping off point for touring the South Island.
Named after Christ Church College at the University of Oxford. It was originally known as Christ Church, the name being abbreviated by common usage by the 1880s
The pre-European (Mâori) name Otautahi, is said to originate from a Mâori chief named Tautahi, who is believed to have occupied a seasonal dwelling on a bank of the Avon River near to where the Barbadoes Street bridge now stands. To date there is no documentary or archaeological evidence to support this contention.

Isn’t Christchurch the place where there was a devastating earthquake earlier this year? The city certainly looked lovely in your photos from the year 2003.

What a classy looking place Christchurch is ,it looks soo clean and it probabbly is . Did you see or meet Rosie ,Rozehill while you were there ? Very nice very colourful and your pictures are so clear ,just a great page .

Your 2-tap washbasin picture made me laugh. When I was in the UK 4 years ago, they put these even in brand-new homes. BTW, we did that in Norway too, in the 50s...
