Norway is divided administratively into 19 fylker. Akershus, being one theese fylker, is again divided into kommuner. That is at least the theory. One could also say thet Akershus has three regions: Romerike (East and north of Oslo), Follo (South of Oslo) and Asker og Bærum (West of Oslo)

Romerike has it's center in Lillestrøm. The people of the region has traditionally been depended on timber from the woods and agriculture. Industry grew in the 1800's as a product of the mechanization of sawmills and the first railway in Norway (From Kristiania i.e. Oslo to Eidsvoll).

Follo owed it's history to the sea. The sea was the highway of choice untill the automobile was introduced in the 1900's. Trading and agriculture was the ting to do in Follo.

Asker og Bærum mined out the mountain for Iron and Calcium. It's central position relative ment that industry had good conditions to work with.
