Akershus fortress seen from the City Hall at night - Oslo

Akershus fortress seen from the City Hall at night

Akershus, Palace and fortress Akershus Fortress Review

This is a really historical site. Find the information office, and ask if you can join a guided tour. It contains bouth a palace buildt for the king, a fortress to protect the city and a church.

Now it's the place for some museums and the national monument. It still has a millitary significanse, but not for its walls. There are mostly offices etc..

Directions: Find the seaside of Rådhuset (the County Hall). When you're looking at the water you'll have the fortress up to your left.

Vigelands "Monoliten" in the distance. - Oslo

Vigelands "Monoliten" in the distance.

The Vigeland park and museum Vigelandsparken Review

Probably the most famous park in Norway, and one of the bigest attractions you've probably found a lot of tips here on VT. Still heres some more information.

The Vigeland park and the Vigeland Muesum contains sculptures from Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943). You can read about his life and work at the link below, so I'll hold my horses for now.

The park is free for anyone, but the museum costs something. I'm affraid I've forgotten what I paied to get in.

Directions: Take the subway to Majorstua. Walk south on kirkeveien, and you'll soon be there.
Alternative: Take tram from the national theater.

Oslo Rådhus (City Hall) - Oslo

Oslo Rådhus (City Hall)

See Rådhuset (the City Hall) Oslo City Hall Review

Norway has three levels of public administration.
1) The state ruled by Stortinget.
2) The 'fylke' Ruled by 'Fylkesstyre' (There are 19 of these).
3) The 'kommune' ruled by a 'kommunestyre'.

Oslo is a special case. It's bouth a Fylke and a Kommune. The building where the politicians meet is Rådhuset. Take a look inside if you can. You should see some magnificent decorations. The bells are situated in one of the towers, and is used to play during the summer.

Address: South of Nationaltheateret

Directions: When you're in Karl Johansgate between the Royal residence ant the parlament: Walk direct South. The red building by the seaside is Rådhuset

Stortinget by night - Oslo

Stortinget by night

Stortinget Stortinget (Goverment building) Review

This must be the most important building in political Norway. I've been inside with classes, but I've never seen single tourists inside, so I don't know if its possible to see the interior for tourists. Ask anyhow.

Address: Karl Johans Gate 22, opposite the Royal Palace

Directions: Like the royal residence, it's in the middle of town. As good as impossible to miss.

The royal home: The Royal Palace The Royal Palace Review

This is the official home of the norwegian royal family. You can see if the king is home by the flag on top of the building. If the flag is up, the kink is in the castle, if not.... (guess).

It's possible to take a guided tour inside, but they just opened for that, so I don't know if you should call in advans. Anyway, it's possible to take a virtual tour inside, even if it's not the same thing. How? Just klick on the link reffered under here.

Address: At the end of Karl Johans Gate

Directions: Right in the verry scenter of the town. It's impossible to miss. At the top of Karl Johans Gate (The street going from the Sentral Station all the way to your destination)
