Living in the Mother City: Cape Town!

by SESM - last update: Jul 3, 2003

Camps Bay Beach, late summer

A Year...A Whole Year!!

After a six month stint living in Cape Town in 1995, all we could think about was how to return! My husband's sabbatical year provided that chance -- this time for an entire year! With the help of friends here, we rented a furnished house in the Southern Suburb of Rosebank (near UCT) and arrived in late January 2003 -- in time for a few more glorious summer weeks!

Natural Beauty

Cape Town is easily one of the most beautiful places on earth! With two oceans, mountains, and the legandary fynbos (pronounced fain boss) which abounds -- it truly has much to offer! Many people who live here spend lots of time outdoors, swimming, surfing, abseiling, and just walking (altho what Capetonians call a walk, many of us would call a hike!).

Rich Culture

Cape Town is a diverse city with a rich cultural life. Music (including famous Cape jazz), theatre, art, and crafts can be found everywhere! Food is an art form here and the wonderful Cape Malay cuisine (which is a sweet version of many popular Indian dishes) is a real highlight. Of course some of the world's best wines come from the Western Cape.

Pros:"Friendly people, amazing beauty, fascinating culture"
Cons:"Crime and poverty are big issues here"
In A Nutshell:"Capitivating beauty -- hard to leave!"
