A new favourite has been found!

by Sjalen - last update: Nov 13, 2004

My husband and I often want to go to different places and have to negotiate, but Bavaria was a place we both wanted to go to. Since we had a week in November, and a week is too short to discover a new country, we decided to discover new cities in a well known country instead. Just a night train away from Copenhagen, it couldn't be easier to get here. Other nationalities think the same, as München Hauptbahnhof has trains to Budapest, Naples and many other places. Italians are a huge chunk of the tourists here which is reflected on menus and in street direction signs.

We had a feeling we would like München since we like beer, mountains and culture, but it still managed to charm the pants off us :))) A very cosmopolitan, yet distinctly Bavarian city, with loads of beer halls, more than 60 museums, a huge park and the Alps close by. I think the only thing I would miss living here would be the sea - and yes, I can imagine living here, as can the rest of the family.

Oh, and sorry to disappoint you if you are looking for Ludwig's castles. As we visited in November, we though daylight hours too short to venture into the mountains and be dependant on public transport. We decided to visit them next time, and actually base ourselves somewhere down there for some days as we also know how easy it is to fall in love with mountain areas. Of course I could have added them nevertheless, like I did with some Munich sights I didn't have time to actually visit. However, at least I know the layout of Munich and can write comments. I don't feel I can about the mountains yet.

I was in Munich during Oktoberfest once, but I didn’t get much of chance to see the city. I wish I’d seen the city gates. Your picture leaves a great impression.
