Lincolnshire is a county often overlooked by foreign tourists who go to counties with more dramatic scenery if they at all leave London. It was the first county I visited since I had a penfriend in Boston (little did I know that ten years later I would have a sister-in-law in Lincoln) and even I thought the landscape flat and not at all like the hills full of sheep that I had imagined was England. Lincolnshire is instead a huge agricultural plain and vegetables are cheaper here than anywhere else in England. This means the landscape has also been drained and canals dug so it is known as Little Holland. In the middle of this plain lies Lincoln, the capital. It is a great shame that not more people come here as this is the gem of the county and one of England's great cathedral cities. In fact, as the landscape is so flat, the cathedral hill is likely to be the first you see of the city from the train or road. It gives it a very dramatic setting. Because relatively few tourists come here, they are still welcomed unlike for instance York where locals have problems with the tourist invasion. |
